I totally get what you mean—Nanny does carry that sense of a long-time, trusted caretaker in English, which is why I leaned towards using it. While I prefer Nanny because of the connotations it carries in English as a person who oversees the well-being of another since childhood as a trusted servant, I have no objections to Gugu especially if it’s more accurate.
